"Reading the Regulations"

Every child care provider in New York State agrees to abide by the NYSOCFS regulations for child day care. Have you ever read them? How recently and how many times? Do you have a current copy that is easily accessible in your home or program? Are you familiar enough with them to refer to the regulations in conversations with parents? This course will help you by offering a few tips on navigating the regulations and asking you to locate a variety of regulations.

The goal of this course is to increase your knowledge about, and familiarity with, the NYS OCFS child day care regulations. To do this you will

• 1. Access the regulations.
• 2. Locate 22 regulations.

This course may be used by center staff, school age staff, family or group family day care providers. It is a beginner level course in the regulations. To complete this course you must have a current copy of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services Regulations. Knowledge of these regulations is required of providers and employees in all types of child care. The regulations are available on line at http://ocfs.ny.gov/main/childcare/daycare_regulations.asp You may work on line, print the regulations, or download them. Also, Training Unlimited is willing to email a set of the current regulations to you at no charge—just ask.

This course provides 3 hours of training in the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (NYSOCFS) regulation area (7) Statutes and Regulations Pertaining to Child Day Care. You will be asked to locate and describe regulations and answer questions from the regulations. One point will be awarded for each of the 50 answers. A score of 80% must be achieved to pass this course.

If your score is 80% or higher, your answer page, with comments, will be mailed or emailed to you within one week of its receipt by Training Unlimited. Your certificate will be mailed the same day your course is corrected.

If you receive a grade less than 80%, you will receive a phone call, a letter, or an email and have the opportunity to correct your work. A certificate will then be mailed to you indicating you have passed the course. Your course must be corrected and your score must reach 80% to receive a certificate.

All certificates are mailed to you; there are no exceptions. However, certificates can be emailed directly to a licensor or registrar. Call for more information if you need this service or if your course will need to be corrected immediately. There is an additional $20 charge for courses that must be graded within 24 hours of submission. This charge includes emailing certificates, immediately upon grading, to a licensor or registrar. This service is NOT always available, so please call or email first.
