"Communicating Effectively"

Did you ever shake your head in confusion, wondering how someone interpreted your words differently than you intended? If you were not clear about your purpose in the conversation, or if your nonverbal and verbal messages did not match, the listener probably came to a conclusion you did not intend. Miscommunications happen daily, especially in child care settings.

The goal of this course is to help participants learn to communicate more effectively. To do this, participants will

• 1. Define effective communication.
• 2. Recognize there are “hidden” influences to all communication.
• 3. Identify one communication skill that needs strengthening and describe strategies for improvement.
• 4. Reflect on parent interactions and write one strategy for improvement.

This course provides training in the following New York State Office of Children and Family Services regulation areas: 1 hour in (3) Child Day Care Program Development and 1 hour in (4) Safety and Security Procedures. After reading the material, you will answer 15 multiple choice questions worth one point each and submit two short written activities worth five points each, for a total of 25 points. A score of 20 points, 80%, must be achieved to pass this course.

If your score is 80% or higher, your answer page, with comments, will be mailed or emailed to you within one week of its receipt by Training Unlimited. Your certificate will be mailed the same day your course is corrected.

If you receive a grade less than 80%, you will receive a phone call, a letter, or an email and have the opportunity to correct your work. A certificate will then be mailed to you indicating you have passed the course. Your course must be corrected and your score must reach 80% to receive a certificate.

All certificates are mailed to you; there are no exceptions. However, certificates can be emailed directly to a licensor or registrar. Call for more information if you need this service or if your course will need to be corrected immediately. There is an additional $20 charge for courses that must be graded within 24 hours of submission. This charge includes emailing certificates, immediately upon grading, to a licensor or registrar. This service is NOT always available, so please call or email first.
