"Cooking with Children"

Cooking with children encourages math, science, language, and motor skill development. Yet many home based, center based, and school age programs rarely include cooking or food preparation activities in their programs. This course will either inspire you to try cooking with the children in your program or challenge you to expand your current program to include even more cooking experiences.

The goal of this course is to encourage day care programs to offer cooking experiences in their curriculum planning. To do this, participants will

• 1. Review reasons to include cooking with children in curriculum planning.
• 2. Identify one skill for each age group of children in care that can be taught during cooking or food preparation activities.
• 3. Select a cooking or food preparation activity and apply course information to it.

This course provides training in the following New York State Office of Children and Family Services regulation areas: 1 hour in area (2) Nutrition and Health Needs of Children and 1 hour in area (3) Child Day Care Program Development. After reading the material, you must answer 15 multiple choice questions worth 1 point each and complete a written activity worth 10 points, a total of 25 points. A score of 80% must be achieved to pass this course.

If your score is 80% or higher, your answer page, with comments, will be mailed or emailed to you within one week of its receipt by Training Unlimited. Your certificate will be mailed the same day your course is corrected.

If you receive a grade less than 80%, you will receive a phone call, a letter, or an email and have the opportunity to correct your work. A certificate will then be mailed to you indicating you have passed the course. Your course must be corrected and your score must reach 80% to receive a certificate.

All certificates are mailed to you; there are no exceptions. However, certificates can be emailed directly to a licensor or registrar. Call for more information if you need this service or if your course will need to be corrected immediately. There is an additional $20 charge for courses that must be graded within 24 hours of submission. This charge includes emailing certificates, immediately upon grading, to a licensor or registrar. This service is NOT always available, so please call or email first.
